Spellcasting

Spellcasting. The Cloudcurrent Trok is a 1st-level spellcaster. Its spellcasting ability is Charisma (spell save DC 12, +4 to hit with spell attacks). The Cloudcurrent Trok has the following spells prepared:

Cantrips (at will): Minor Illusion, Prestidigitation

1st level (2 slots): Disguise Self, Fog Cloud

**Special Notes**:
– **Cloud Trickster** allows the Trok to use *Minor Illusion* at will, creating simple visual deceptions to mislead foes.
– The Trok typically casts *Fog Cloud* before combat to obscure visibility and create an advantage for misdirection.
– It can use *Disguise Self* to alter its appearance if it wants to deceive or confuse other creatures before engaging in combat. These spells help enhance its trickster nature, sowing chaos among enemies before launching direct or indirect attacks.

Actions & Abilities

Multiattack: The Cloudcurrent Trok can take two actions on its turn, one using **Cloud Tendril** and one using **Bubbling Laughter**.

Cloud Tendril: – *Type*: Melee Weapon Attack
– *Attack Bonus*: +4 to hit
– *Reach*: 5 ft.
– *Target*: One creature
– *Hit*: 5 (1d6 + 2) slashing damage.
– *Effect*: The target must succeed on a DC 10 Dexterity saving throw or become restrained until the end of its next turn. A creature restrained this way takes 2 (1d4) psychic damage at the start of each of its turns. The Trok can use its dexterity to squeeze through tight spaces and can easily maneuver in the air, making it difficult for opponents to predict its next move.

Bubbling Laughter: – *Type*: Special Ability
– *Range*: 30 ft.
– *Area*: 30 ft-radius sphere centered on the Trok
– *Saving Throw*: DC 11 Wisdom
– *Effect*: Each creature within the area must make a Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save, they become charmed until the end of their next turn, perceiving the Trok as a harmless trickster and unable to attack it. While charmed, the creature has disadvantage on attack rolls against the Trok, as they are caught up in the whimsical charm and cannot take it seriously.

Gusty Escape: – *Type*: Special Reaction (Triggered when the Trok drops to 0 hit points)
– *Effect*: When the Cloudcurrent Trok drops to 0 hit points, it instantly dissolves into thick mist, vanishing from view. The mist lingers in a 10-foot radius area for 1 minute. During this time, the Trok cannot be harmed or take actions, and it can reappear in any unoccupied space within 100 feet of its original position as a bonus action at the end of that duration. The mist obscures vision for all within it, imposing disadvantage on attack rolls against creatures that enter.

Ethereal Drift: – *Type*: Trait
– *Effect*: The Cloudcurrent Trok moves gracefully through the air, ignoring difficult terrain and can reposition itself without provoking opportunity attacks. This enables it to nimbly navigate through foes and avoid being cornered, making tactical repositioning in battle a key feature of its gameplay.

Cloud Illusion (Recharge 5-6): – *Type*: Special Ability
– *Effect*: The Cloudcurrent Trok conjures a complex illusion resembling a misty duplicate of itself or an enticing object (e.g., a shimmering treasure) up to 60 ft. away. The illusion lasts for 1 minute or until dispelled. Each creature that interacts with the illusion (making a melee attack against it or investigating it) can make a DC 12 Intelligence saving throw. On a failed save, they believe the illusion is real, wasting an attack or action against it. Creatures that interact with the illusion without hitting it recognize it as an illusion on a successful save, and the Trok can use this to create confusion during combat.

Tactical Information

Tactical Information and Combat Behavior for Cloudcurrent Trok

Combat Role: The Cloudcurrent Trok serves primarily as a mischief-maker and controller rather than a direct combatant. It excels in causing chaos and confusion during encounters while using its mobility to stay out of harm’s way.

Combat Behavior

  1. Initiation of Combat:

    • The Cloudcurrent Trok tends to initiate combat with playful deception. It may first attempt to use its Cloud Trickster trait to obscure the battlefield with illusory terrain or create the illusion of dangerous creatures lurking to lure invaders into tighter formations.
  2. Positioning:

    • The Trok will take to the air first, utilizing its hover ability to position itself strategically above adversaries. It looks for vantage points or areas with high visibility to all opponents while avoiding clusters of enemies to minimize the risk of being attacked.
  3. Target Selection:

    • It will focus on weaker or isolated targets within its reach, particularly spellcasters or ranged characters who could pose a threat. The Trok may also avoid heavily armored opponents unless necessary for misdirection.
  4. Attacking Strategy:

    • The Trok will initiate combat using its Cloud Tendril attack, focusing on attacking foes that seem pivotal to the party’s strategy. If successful, it aims to restrain them, causing a ripple effect of chaos within the adventurers’ ranks.
  5. Using Abilities:

    • When engaging with multiple foes, it will prioritize using Bubbling Laughter to charm opponents, thus diverting attention from its allies or creating openings for surprise attacks. This ability not only helps save its own skin but also disrupts the enemy’s cohesion.
  6. Mobility and Evasion:

    • Should it sustain damage, the Trok will employ Ethereal Drift to escape rather than confronting foes directly. This maneuver allows it to reposition while avoiding any opportunity attacks, and it frequently zigzags through the air to dodge targeted spells or ranged attacks.
  7. Gusty Escape:

    • Upon dropping to low health or becoming overwhelmed, the Trok will activate Gusty Escape to vanish into mist. It can reappear at a safe distance, often using this opportunity to further disorient opponents as they search the battlefield for it. This ability can buy time for other reinforcements, enhancing the sense of unpredictability.

Narrative Interactions

  1. Before Combat:

    • During exploratory encounters, Cloudcurrent Troks might tantalizingly display their capabilities by alluringly shimmering and displaying illusions of treasure or safe paths. Often, they giggle softly, creating an inviting yet ominous atmosphere as a prelude to negotiations or confrontations.
  2. Inquisitive Trickster:

    • When interacting with characters, a Cloudcurrent Trok may initially appear charming and inquisitive, eager to learn about adventurers’ intentions. If treated kindly, it may offer misleading guidance—showing them captivating sights while leading them towards chaotic situations or rival creatures lurking in the wings.
  3. Leading Adventurers:

    • If encountered in a narrative context, Troks might attempt to mislead traveling adventurers at crossroads, manipulating their decisions to create humorous or perilous situations that fit into their whimsical identity. They frequently enjoy the confusion they create without malicious intent.
  4. Resolution of Conflict:

    • Should combat ensue and then be defused—whether through charm or clever negotiation—Cloudcurrent Troks might exchange tales of the skies or play light-hearted challenges, engaging players in their mischievous reveries instead of combat. These encounters could also satisfy party objectives, such as leading them safely through stormy regions in exchange for interesting stories or rare enchanted trinkets.
  5. Post-Encounter:

    • After a successful encounter (or escape), the Trok may leave behind an illusory gift (like a floating gem or a map) as a playful memento, allowing adventurers to ponder the nature of their whimsical foe. Alternatively, those who fall into its charm might receive cryptic advice, hinting at greater adventures or other Trok who might lead to unforeseen paths.

By embodying the essence of enchantment and treachery, the Cloudcurrent Trok creates engaging gameplay that delicately balances peril and whimsy, inviting adventurers into a world where not all is as it seems in the beautiful, shifting cloudscapes.
