Spellcasting

Spellcasting. Fluffernox the Sugar Wraith is a 3rd-level spellcaster. Its spellcasting ability is Charisma (spell save DC 13, +5 to hit with spell attacks). Fluffernox has the following spells prepared:

Cantrips (at will): *Dancing Lights*, *Minor Illusion*

1st level (2 slots): *Charm Person*, *Disguise Self*

2nd level (2 slots): *Fog Cloud*, *Misty Step*

Special notes about the spellcaster’s spellcasting abilities: Fluffernox often casts *Charm Person* before engaging in combat to lure unsuspecting adventurers, attempting to charm them into a false sense of safety. It utilizes *Fog Cloud* to obscure its movements and provide cover while using its other abilities. It has a predilection for creating illusions with *Minor Illusion* to distract or mislead foes. With its enchanting abilities, Fluffernox embodies the trickster spirit of an age-old fairytale, effectively using its spells to deceive and ensnare those it encounters.

Actions & Abilities

Multiattack: Fluffernox makes two attacks: one with **Cuddle Smother** and one with **Sugar Shock**.

Cuddle Smother: *Special Ability* **Range:** 5 ft. **Targets:** One creature within 5 feet – Fluffernox envelops a creature in its sugary mist, attempting to restrain them. – **Saving Throw:** The targeted creature must succeed on a DC 13 Strength saving throw. – **On a failed save:** The creature is **restrained** for 1 minute. While restrained in this way, the creature is surrounded by an enchanting mist that disorients them, giving attacks against them advantage. – **On a successful save:** The creature is unaffected and can act normally. – A restrained creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success.

Sugar Shock (Recharge 5-6): *Area Effect Attack* **Range:** 15 ft. cone **Targets:** Each creature in the area – Fluffernox releases a wave of sweet mist in a 15-foot cone. Each creature in that area must make a DC 13 Constitution saving throw. – **On a failed save:** The creature takes 14 (4d6) necrotic damage and is **poisoned** for 1 minute. – **On a successful save:** The creature takes half damage and is not poisoned. – A poisoned creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success.

Charmed Craving (Recharge 1/day): *Spell-like Ability* – Fluffernox casts *Charm Person* at will against a target it chooses within 30 feet. – **Saving Throw:** The target must succeed on a DC 13 Wisdom saving throw to resist the effect. – **On a failed save:** The target is charmed by Fluffernox for 1 hour and views it as a friendly acquaintance. – The charmed creature can repeat the saving throw if it takes damage from Fluffernox or its allies. On a successful save, the effect ends.

Ethereal Mist: *Reactions* – When Fluffernox is hit by an attack, it may use its reaction to activate its **Ethereal Mist** ability, momentarily becoming less tangible. – **Effect:** The next attack against Fluffernox has disadvantage, and it gains temporary invisibility until the end of its next turn.

Alluring Aroma: *Bonus Action* – Fluffernox can fill a 10-foot radius around it with its sweet aroma. – Creatures within this radius must succeed on a DC 13 Wisdom saving throw or be **drawn closer** to Fluffernox, moving up to half their speed towards it during their next turn. – Those who succeed are immune to this effect until the end of Fluffernox’s next turn.

Appearance

  • Size and Shape: Fluffernox is a large, amorphous creature that floats gracefully at roughly 8 feet tall when fully expanded. Its shape resembles that of an oversized cotton candy puff, ever-changing as it swirls through the air, giving it an almost fluid, ethereal quality.

  • Coloration: The wraith’s form is a delightful mixture of pastel colors, predominantly soft pinks and blues. These colors blend and swirl together in a mesmerizing pattern that shifts with its movements, giving an illusion of a candy creation caught in a gentle breeze. Sparkles of glittering, sugar-like crystals adorn its exterior, catching light and refracting it into a dazzling display.

  • Texture and Surface Features: Fluffernox’s surface appears delicate and airy, resembling spun sugar. Its texture is fluffy and soft, inviting to the eye but deceptive to the touch. It emits a faint, sweet aroma reminiscent of candy floss, which lingers in the air around it. Upon contact, one would feel a strange mix—a light, sticky sensation as if being enveloped by vapor rather than physical substance.

  • Facial Features: Fluffernox possesses a simple yet eerie face, featuring large, shiny black orbs that serve as its eyes. These eyes glimmer with mischief, reflecting a hint of malice beneath their surface. Its mouth is a subtle crescent shape that can widen to reveal a void, unfilled by teeth or menace, but capable of projecting overwhelming allure or fear, depending on its desires.

  • Limbs and Appendages: The creature lacks defined arms or legs, instead possessing wisp-like tendrils of sugary mist that trail behind it. These tendrils can extend and wrap around targets to ensnare them or gently wave in the air, creating an illusion of motion akin to a flowing fabric. When Fluffernox attacks, these tendrils can morph into more tangible shapes, capable of ‘cuddling’ its victims.

  • Special Features: Fluffernox’s eyes possess a faint, captivating shimmer that draws others closer, while its form emits a subtle, magical glow while it hovers. Delicate strings of sugary mist extend from its body, often catching the light and creating a sparkling effect that enhances its enchanting visual display. When it dances through the air, the mist creates illusory traces, making it challenging to discern its true movements.

  • Posture and Movement: Fluffernox maintains a loosely hovering posture, gliding effortlessly through the air as if carried by a gentle breeze. Its movements are fluid and almost hypnotic, resembling a soft wave or a slow dance, allowing it to drift gracefully away from danger while maintaining a whimsical allure that can distract its pursuers.

  • Additional Notable Traits: Fluffernox is constantly surrounded by a haze of sparkling, magical energy that hints at its supernatural nature. This energy can invoke feelings of happiness or excitement, contrasting starkly with its darker intentions. The creature’s constantly shifting colors and glimmers of light create a mesmerizing visual that can mesmerize even the most wary adventurer, drawing them closer into its sugary embrace.

Tactical Information

Tactical Information for Fluffernox the Sugar Wraith

Combat Behavior:

  1. Surprise and Deception:

    • Ambush Style: Fluffernox will often hide among colorful fairground decorations or animate foliage in an enchanted forest, waiting for unsuspecting adventurers. It uses its natural camouflage and ability to hover quietly to make a surprise ambush, giving it the advantage in initiative.
    • Psychological Tactics: Before engaging, it might create gusts of sugary winds to mislead players, making them hear laughter or the sound of festivities to draw them in. Fluffernox thrives off the hope and excitement it instills in its prey.
  2. Opening Moves:

    • Charm and Manipulation: Fluffernox will use its Charmed Craving to cast Charm Person on the most reliant or disadvantaged party member, hoping to temporarily neutralize a threat. This allows the Wraith to manipulate the charmed character into thinking it’s friendly, coaxing them closer, thereby setting up future attacks.
    • Creating Distraction: Once it has one adventurer charmed, Fluffernox uses its mobility to hover away, floating above lower terrain or around objects for cover, intending to confuse the rest of the party about its true nature.
  3. Area Control:

    • Sugar Shock Attack: Once Fluffernox assesses that players are grouped together or have bunched up to investigate, it launches its Sugar Shock, targeting multiple enemies to create disarray. The necrotic damage, combined with the potential poison effect, forces diverse reactions from the party, fracturing their strategy.
    • Movement and Positioning: Fluffernox is not shy to reposition after using Sugar Shock, floating back to avoid melee confrontation and leveraging its high Dexterity to remain elusive.
  4. Engagement with Victims:

    • Cuddle Smother Folly: If a player gets too close or attempts to touch Fluffernox out of curiosity or in an attempt to aid their charmed companion, it will swiftly enact the Cuddle Smother, potentially restraining them and creating a secondary threat for the party to manage.
    • Isolation Tactics: Once a character is restrained, Fluffernox will focus its attempts on disorienting remaining fighters by casting Sugar Shock again if available or trying to charm another character using its charm effects. It will prioritize deciding fights by neutralizing threats one by one.
  5. Escape and Evasion:

    • Flight and Terrain Adaptation: If the tide turns, Fluffernox will leverage its hovering ability to escape from combat, retreating into spaces with obstacles or using natural cover to break line of sight while it attempts to regain morale and plan its next move.
    • Transformation and Illusion: Should it risk getting cornered, Fluffernox can momentarily flicker an illusion of being a harmless candy creation, misleading attackers while escaping using its agility.

Narrative Interactions:

  1. Sweet Temptation:

    • When players first encounter Fluffernox, it can engage them with playful banter, exclaiming delightfully about the pleasures of sweet treats. It might lure them in with promises of tasting the magic of the realm’s confectionery wonders, enticing them to share stories or partake in whimsical games.
  2. Illusions of Grandeur:

    • Fluffernox might conjure illusions of grand feasts or sticky sweet playgrounds that shimmer in front of the adventurers, painting a picture of cotton candy clouds and rolling hills of dessert, captivating their imagination, but simultaneously hiding its dark intent.
  3. Dual Nature Revelations:

    • As players interact, Fluffernox’s voice can take on a hint of malice, occasionally revealing its true nature through sinister laughter or cryptic words that hint at danger, heightening tension and pointing towards the duality of sweetness harboring a frightening core.
  4. Potential Allies:

    • If a character manages to withstand the effects of charm or interacts with Fluffernox in a clever way (i.e., through treats or questions about its past), they might discover remnants of Elara’s good intentions, offering them the chance to either sway it back toward goodness or to gain a strategic ally against its brethren.
  5. Connection with the Past:

    • Fluffernox might reminisce about the joy it once was, sharing fragments of Elara’s dreams, offering a moment for players to appreciate its tragic backstory before they realize they must confront the predicaments it creates. This could lead to thematic moral dilemmas about battling a creature that was once a source of joy but is now corrupted.

In both combat and narrative engagement, Fluffernox the Sugar Wraith offers a blend of enchantment and dread, compelling players to navigate the fine line between allure and danger in an enigmatic encounter.
