November was a great month for board gaming, and we played many different games—some new, some classics, and some we had been waiting a long time for! Here’s a recap of the fun we had this month.
Marvel Crisis Protocol: This time, it was the Guardians of the Galaxy (Starlord, Gamora, Nebula, Rocket, and Groot) against the Hellfire Club (Emma Frost, Psylocke, Wong, Spider-Man, and Black Widow). The Hellfire Club took an early lead in points, but the Guardians turned the tide and knocked out each member of the Hellfire Club. Emma Frost’s Diamond Form “Shatter” attack delivered some big blows, but it wasn’t enough. The Guardians came out on top! Groot’s resilience played a key role, keeping the Guardians in the fight. In the end, teamwork and strategy helped the Guardians secure their victory.
Joyride: Survival of the Fastest: We played a few tutorial races to learn the game, and it was a blast! One thing I liked was that crashing into walls didn’t mean you were out of the race. The game feels balanced and exciting, and I can’t wait to play it more often. The different upgrades and power-ups you can pick up along the way make every race feel unique, adding a lot of replayability. We also enjoyed the fast pace and how even players who fall behind can catch up with the right moves. It’s definitely a game that keeps everyone engaged until the very end.
Scrabble: We hadn’t played Scrabble in a long time, so it was nice to get this classic to the table. It ended up being a close game, with each player scoring over 170 points. It was a reminder of how timeless and fun word games can be.
Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde: This is a two-player trick-taking game where one player tries to keep Dr. Jekyll sane while the other embraces Mr. Hyde’s chaos. The challenge is to keep the number of tricks balanced between players—the bigger the difference, the faster Dr. Jekyll turns into Mr. Hyde. The game quality is excellent, and it captures the theme well.
Freedom Five: We backed this on Kickstarter years ago, and it finally arrived. We played one game so far, which was a great way to learn the mechanics. Freedom Five has an amazing theme and table presence, reminding us of games like Pandemic and Defenders of the Realm. We haven’t played it much yet, but we have spent a lot of time painting the miniatures. We can’t wait for more gameplay!
Kingdom Builder: We hadn’t played Kingdom Builder in a while, but it was fun to revisit. The changing board configurations make the game different every time, and the goals and special actions keep it interesting. With Donald X. Vaccarino, the designer of Dominion, behind it, it’s no surprise we enjoy this game so much!
Ticket to Ride: This classic never disappoints. We played the North American map, and it was as competitive as ever, with lots of tension around the major routes. It’s always fun to try to outthink your opponents while connecting cities and completing tickets.
Magic: The Gathering: We played a few rounds of Commander, one of our favorite formats. Syr Ginger, the Meal Ender, once again proved to be a fun and tough Commander. The games were full of surprises. We also found a new favorite Commander, Hazel of the Rootbloom. Talk about squirrel token madness! At one point, a Scute Swarm on the board made over 300 Scute Swarm tokens and another 180 squirrel tokens (thanks to Chatterfang). It was a wild match!
Sushi Go Party!: This one is always a hit with the family. During our game, Nana said she had no idea what was going on. We didn’t believe her though, as not only did she win, she beat everyone else by over 10 points. Sneaky Nana! We had a great time drafting sushi, and the variety of cards in this deluxe version keeps every round fresh and fun. It’s light, quick, and perfect for family night.
Overall, November was a wonderful month for gaming, filled with fun, new strategies, and quality time with friends and family. We can’t wait to see what next month brings!
