September was a great month for board gaming in our household, with a mix of old favorites and exciting new experiences. There’s something about gathering around the table, shuffling cards, and rolling dice that brings our family together. The warmth of sharing these moments, whether we are cheering each other on or feeling the sting of near-defeat, truly makes board gaming one of our favorite pastimes.
We kicked things off this month with Railroad Ink, a delightful puzzler that’s perfect for solo play or gathering friends around the table. It’s such a satisfying feeling to connect those routes, and whether you’re strategizing quietly alone or collaborating with others, it always brings a sense of accomplishment.
Next up was Legendary: A Marvel Deck Building Game, where I reintroduced one of my personal favorites to my daughter. We took on the challenge of defeating Zombie Scarlet Witch as the Mastermind, and let me tell you, it was a nail-biter! Down to the last few cards, we barely scraped by, but that made our victory all the sweeter. Playing Legendary with her brought back all the reasons why I love this game—immersive storytelling, tense decision-making, and of course, the joy of teamwork.
Streets made its debut in our collection this month as well. My son and I jumped into this vibrant urban development game, laying out tiles and building our little city block by block. We might not have moved the meeples perfectly, but we still had a blast! There’s always something special about that first play-through—learning the quirks and discovering the strategies together. We can’t wait to give it another go, now that we have a better grip on the mechanics.
Sentinels of the Multiverse: Definitive Edition finally hit the table, and I took this one on solo. I’ve heard it mentioned often in the same breath as Marvel Champions, and I have to say, it lived up to the hype. The low setup time made it an easy choice for a relaxed evening, and the high replayability means it will definitely be making more appearances in my solo rotation. It’s always rewarding to step into the shoes of superheroes, even if just for an hour or two.
Sky Team was another new adventure, this time with my daughter as my co-pilot. We worked together to land the plane safely in Montreal, and while we’re still ironing out some of the rules, it was such a fun experience. Co-op games like this really bring us together, creating moments of tension and triumph that we’ll be laughing about for days. We’re excited to take to the skies again soon!
Tsuro also made an appearance—always a good time! My son and I played several rounds, and it’s amazing how such a simple game can be so engaging. The elegance of Tsuro never fails to charm us, and it’s one of those games that we can just pick up and play without any fuss. No matter how many times we play, it never gets old.
For Northwood! offered a great solo trick-taking experience. It’s a wonderfully thoughtful game, and I found myself deeply immersed in the challenges it presented. There’s something about solo gaming that allows you to lose yourself in the strategy, and For Northwood! provided just the right level of complexity to make it a satisfying brain workout.
Everdell was another highlight—its gorgeous theme and worker-placement mechanics never fail to draw us in. We did face some tough luck when filling out the marketplace, but that’s just part of the game! You take what comes and make the best of it, and it’s all worth it for those moments when everything finally falls into place. Everdell always brings a smile to our faces, even when the “bad luck fairy” pays a visit.
We also found time for several rounds of Magic the Gathering, focusing on Commander games. My son and I went head-to-head a few times, and we’ve discovered that Syr Ginger, the Meal Ender has quickly become one of our favorite Commanders. The combination of Syr Ginger’s resilience and versatility makes every match exciting, and it’s been a joy to explore different strategies together.
Finally, we rounded off the month with Unsurmountable, a solo card game that challenged me to make it to the mountain summit. It’s quick to set up, easy to understand, but far from an easy climb! The journey to the top was full of twists and turns, and that sense of accomplishment when reaching the summit made every attempt worthwhile.
Overall, September was a month filled with memorable gaming moments, lots of laughs, and quality time spent with the people I love most. Whether we were battling villains, building cities, or soaring through the skies, every game added its own special touch to our month. Board gaming has this wonderful way of making time slow down, letting us savor every victory, every laugh, and every shared experience. We can’t wait to see what October brings!
